THE CALL TO DARKNESS

From the moment I saw the brief, I knew I had to make this film. The tone, references, and emotional weight aligned perfectly with the kind of work I’m drawn to, and the visual language began to take shape almost instantly.

Working closely with Riot, we shaped a fully realised creative direction, supported by detailed designs and a complete animatic that captured the pacing, mood, and emotional flow of the piece. Riot's creative input helped push the film toward greater restraint, atmosphere, and clarity.

In many ways, Viego’s journey through the afterlife mirrored my own creative journey on the project; an intense, demanding and deeply personal process.

A WORLD THAT REMEMBERS

The story unfolds as a journey through memory. As Viego moves through the afterlife, statues, ruins, and vast empty spaces trigger violent flashbacks, revealing fragments of his past through symbolic encounters rather than literal storytelling.

Each memory bleeds into the environment, allowing the world itself to carry the narrative. These moments offer glimpses of a much larger mythology, letting atmosphere, scale, and visual metaphor carry the story forward.

Unlike typical Riot trailers, the film leans heavily into restraint. It builds tension slowly through mood and pacing, holding back the action until the final act, where the violence finally erupts.

THE SHAPE OF VENGEANCE

The character design was central to defining the tone of the film. Starting from the in-game model, we pushed toward a more graphic, cinematic silhouette, balancing elegance, menace, and emotional weight.

Viego’s enormous sword became a key challenge. Its scale and detail demanded careful control of proportion, pose, and line thickness to preserve impact without overwhelming the animation. The final design carries a sharp, iconic presence, refined, powerful, and unmistakably Viego.

With a small team and ambitious scope, I took on a highly hands-on role across direction and art direction, shaping the film’s visual language shot by shot. This close involvement helped keep the tone consistent, allowing story, design, and atmosphere to evolve as one.

Sanguine Viego represents the direction I want to keep pushing as a director, dark, cinematic, emotionally driven storytelling, grounded in strong visual identity and atmosphere.

It sits at the intersection of narrative, animation, and mood, reflecting the kind of work I find most creatively fulfilling. Films that draw you in, build tension, and take you on a journey, with story and craft moving together.
